movie: Oz the Great and Powerful

Hello! I’m sad to report I didn’t make the quarter finalist round in the abna. Ah well, c’est la vie. I still love my book. It made the top 20%, so that’s something to be proud of. It will be out later this summer.

We saw Oz the Great and Powerful this weekend! We caught it at imax, which was pretty darn awesome.

Here’s the description from imdb: “A small-time magician arrives in an enchanted land and is forced to decide if he will be a good man or a great one.”

The makers of this movie made a good effort to mimic the style of the classic Wizard of Oz. The first portion of it was in black and white. The acting and the filming seemed quite old timey.

Then, once in Oz, we add splashy special effects and a healthy dose of color. The environment was top notch, over-the-top fantasy, even more so than in The Wizard of Oz. Of course, movie making tech has made a couple of advances since back in the day.

Aside from the general prettiness, Oz had a nice amount of story, good character development. The whole thing was very well done and entertaining to watch. I also like how it dug further into the whole relationship dynamic with the witches. Very nice.

Oz the Great and Powerful gets an A.

  1. Congratulations on making the top 20% in abna. That’s no small deal.
