movie: Man of Steel

We’ve been having tons of fun digging out of the giant pile of snow the sky decided to dump on us. I should say the husband has had fun digging out. I don’t really do the whole snow shoveling thing. I’m really more of an indoor girl during harsh temperature weather.

We watched the most recent Superman movie this weekend.

Description from IMDB: “A young itinerant worker is forced to confront his secret extrastellar origin when Earth is invaded by members of his own race.”

I should disclose that I’m not a big Superman fan. I think he’s kinda cheesy and doesn’t have an overabundance of personality. I’d take Tony Stark over him any day of the week. That being said, I like this movie okay.

It starts out showing the alien world Krypton in its final death throes. That was cool. I did have a problem with the attitude of the people there. They have advanced technology and are fully capable of space travel, yet they make no effort to leave their planet as it’s falling apart around them, like the full brunt of nature’s fury and they just throw their hands up. Oh well, guess we’re totally going to die. The government officials don’t even try to leave.

Anyway. So, then the movie fast forwards to Superman as an adult, but it also does this back-and-forth business between adult and childhood memory several times. That was kind of annoying.

On top of that, Superman still doesn’t have any real personality to speak of. He just walks around brooding and being noble.

I did like this incarnation of Lois Lane. She seems very good at being brave and getting herself into trouble.

I also liked the Zod character, played by Michael Shannon of Boardwalk Empire. He was almost likable though, really a kind of hero himself when you take into account that all he wants to do is bring his people back. He wasn’t overly pleased with the fall of Krypton, which is understandable.

The special effects were cool, the fight scenes, the robots and ships and then various alien creatures of Krypton. The movie tries too hard to be poignant. It was okay.

Man of Steel gets a B-.
