Story Notes: Midnight Sarcophagus

Hey there! A quick announcement before we commence story notes. I’m pushing the podcast launch out until Monday. I want to give all 3 episodes one last listen to make sure there’s nothing amiss in the files, plus launching at the beginning of the week makes more sense than launching at the end.

On to the story notes!

Midnight Sarcophagus is one of the few stories I’ve written that had a definite, real world inspiration.

I LOVE archaeology. When I was a kid, I wanted to be an archaeologist, probably the influence of Indiana Jones movies. Don’t get me wrong, I knew the job wasn’t really like that.

What I loved and still love is the mystery. There’s so much we don’t know or understand about the ancient world.

Anyway, the specific inspiration for this story came from a news article. I don’t remember specifically which article, but I do remember the subject.

An unusually large sarcophagus was found in Egypt. Here’s a link to an article about it.

And, here’s a coupla pix.

Look at that thing. It’s a beast, isn’t it? How big? 8′ 1/2″ X 5′

If I remember correctly, there was some delay between the find and the announcement saying what they found inside. I don’t know what I expected. Maybe some real life magic? Maybe some weird creature or a giant?

Nope. It contained 3 humans (one lady and two men) and a bunch of gross liquid and sludge. I was disappointed. I mean, it’s still cool and interesting.

So I took that big sarcophagus and dropped it into a story. I gave it some weird creatures and a dash of demon. The result is this novelette.
