Dark Crystal News!

OMG, I am SO excited. The Dark Crystal is coming to Netflix as a new show. It’s a prequel. It’s called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. I think the book I have is a prequel so it might follow that storyline.

I loved this movie so much when I was a kid. Really, anything Jim Henson did was genius, but The Dark Crystal took it to a whole new level. The detail and love that went into that movie is so obvious throughout. In the teaser trailer below, Jim Henson says that he considers it art. I do, too.

As a lot of people were, I was devastated when Jim Henson died, and I hope he’s with this in spirit. I have high hopes that this is going to be awesome.

Friday Bloggin

The weather this week has been SO much better, not as much heat, not as much humidity. As much as I like summer, I don’t do very well in the heat.

I had run-ins with wildlife this week. I was bitten on the face by a flying ant (an unprovoked attack, I assure you.) and a pair of baby bunnies fell into the basement window well. Here’s a picture for you to awwww…

IMG_20160630_181717847

Those 2 characters in the background are part of our zombie gnome collection.

I got the bunnies out using a bucket and I was careful not to touch them but one did jump over me and into my basement. It dashed around and then under a couch. The other one did not escape into the house but he did panic and then bonk his head on the window as he tried to run away. Poor babies! I was glad they weren’t dead this time. We find dead bunnies in there sometimes and that is both sad and disgusting.

We really need to cover that window well with a screen or something.

I finished the read-through of the 2nd AnnaBeth book today. I made some much needed adjustments and changes and hopefully did not screw anything new up in the process. It will get a run through spellcheck and maybe another read-through before I release the 2nd edition of the print book.

Now, the next project is the first read-through of the third and last AnnaBeth book. I hope it’s in good shape. I feel like it might be.

I plan to make a deliciously large dent in that task this weekend while I’m on my one-day writing retreat. That’s right! I am attending a writing function during which other writers will be present. I have never done this before. I’m kind of excited about it.

This is where I’m going –

columbia club

It’s called the Columbia Club and it looks super fancy. I’m actually not sure if I’m fancy enough to be there. I guess we’ll find out! I’ll try to snap a couple of better pictures when I’m there if I can do it without looking overly touristy or like I don’t get out much. I actually don’t get out much, incidentally, but that’s beside the point.

If this goes well, if I get make great leaps and bounds of productivity, I might try to do something similar on my own. I could always hide in the basement for a weekend day and demand that the children and the husband leave me be. Would they actually do it? I do not know.

That’s it for now. Catch ya later.

The Errant Book Child

Hey! How are things? Well, I hope.

I finished another rough draft of a book, well, almost. I have a scene or two left, but more or less, it is done. It’s a short, middle-grade book that I thought would be an easy project.

Turns out, it wasn’t. Writing it was like dealing with a kid that just won’t go to sleep, and when you finally get them to lie down, they do so somewhere weird, like the bathtub.

I’m a big believer in letting a thing be what it wants to be, but in this case, I need to use a heavier hand, which makes me worry about the book as a whole. I think the concept and the bones of the story are okay.

The execution just lacks the level of emotion and detail it needs to be good. I’ve been going through some stuff lately, so my emotional and mental energy have probably been affected. I need to find a way to recharge, and that’s going to involve a somewhat significant break from writing. If I’m not at my best then I’m just creating more work for myself down the road.

So, yeah, new writings are on hold for a while, at least a month, except for maybe some blogging.

Trials and Trilogies

Hi! How are my favorite internet people? Not too much is going on over here, except for work. There’s always work, which is fine and dandy by me.

Writing the last part of a trilogy is a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. I’ve written sequels before and that wasn’t a huge deal , but a three-fer is apparently an entirely different animal. This one is the third AnnaBeth book.

As I’ve moved along her story line, things have gotten more complex. Book 1 was an introduction to her world. Book 2 built on that. Book 3 builds on everything.

I’m trying to keep it as simple as possible but fresh at the same time, which means new characters. I’ve got 7 new ones in this installment. That seems like a lot.

They’re kind of grouped together, though. Like a pair of them are demons, and there’s a witch and warlock couple. I have a 2-in-1 ghost. So, if you can remember who one is, you can probably remember the other one.

I did cut some characters, at least 4 that I can think of off the top of my head. They didn’t die or anything; they just aren’t in this book. So maybe it will balance out in the end.

One main character might die. I don’t know for sure yet. I have to see where the story wants to go.

I have a goal to finish the rough draft by 2/28. I think that’s about 2 months from when I started. It’s a nice time frame, efficient but not nanowrimo-level crazy. I’m at about 50,000 words at the moment. I can make it if I get my butt moving.

That’s the project for this weekend – typing many words. I don’t think my social butterfly husband planned anything, which means extended quiet time may be in my near future.

Oh, I should mention that Love and the Dark is now free on Amazon. Woo! So if you haven’t grabbed a copy yet, here is the link.

Things and Stuff

Hey-o! I have all of this stuff I keep meaning to post, and then I get distracted by book writing or gaming or job hunting, etc, and then the stuff does not get posted. So today, I am posting stuff.
I have a couple of things. The Blood of Guardians is up on Wattpad in its entirety. It is also in a variety of other places: iBooks, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Scribd and so on and so forth for free.
You can also find it in the Kindle store, but I’m not allowed to make things free there, so it’s 99 cents, which is the lowest price they allow. However, if enough people report the price difference, they might make it free. Know what I’m sayin’?
Another book will be out soon. I know I said it would be out before this. Things always take longer than I think they will. I should really just estimate time and add like 3 months. I like the next book much better than Guardians. It’s different in a good way.
Whiplash-inducing subject change – I have a cover redesign for Pestilence Rising! I was digging through a cabinet full of books a couple of weeks ago and a copy of it fell out. I picked it up and looked at the cover and decided that the design didn’t fit the book at all. It looks like a Sword and the Stone knockoff or some other kind of medieval business, and that’s not what it is AT ALL.
So, yes. I screwed that one up. It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last.
Here’s the old cover.

Here’s the new cover.

Much better. I have only updated the Kindle version so far. The print version and the other digital versions still have the old cover. I will work on updating those another day.
I am also working on a Facebook page for my books. I created it and set up the cover photo. I need to add some stuff to it, because it’s pretty much empty. I’ll post a link to it when I make it public.

I think that’s it for now. Oh, quick writing update – last AnnaBeth book rough draft is up to 22000 words. I think the last 2 were like 70,000 to 80,000 words.

Smell ya later.

Mo Chapters on Wattpad

Two new chapters of The Blood of Guardians are up in Wattpad! I also found a completely butchered spelling of “camaraderie” in the first chapter, so that’s fixed now. Apparently that was a word that I could not spell, but I can now. YAY!  😀

Oh, if you haven’t read the first story, What the Dead Fear is on there too. Here’s a link. The second one will probably make more sense if you read the first things first.

In other very quick news, I’m writing a new thing!!! I haven’t written anything that wasn’t a rewrite in over a year, so I’m really excited. It’s the last AnnaBeth book, so if you’ve been waiting for that, I am officially working on it. I noticed the other day that the previous installment of the trilogy came out 4 years ago. 4 years!!! I did NOT mean to wait this long to finish it! I’m about 10,000 words in.

NaNoWriMo the rundown

I have completed the NaNoWriMo task! I cruised in on the final day with a final nano word count of 50,213 and damn, I was tired. If November were five days longer, I don’t think I would’ve made it. Seriously.

Overall, it was fun. I had a tendency to swing from obsessively writing to feelings of – ugh, how am I still doing this??? It got really difficult, especially toward the end.

I didn’t really have time to get stuck on anything so the first idea out was the first idea out. There will likely be some significant rewriting to eliminate all the top of the head stuff in there.

The husband asked if there was a prize for this business. Sort of. I get that nifty sense of accomplishment, the book that’s almost finished. I got to watch the enthusiastic winner video on the nano website. That was funny. There’s a printable certificate and the winner badge, the latter of which I plan to add to the blog sidebar. This is what it looks like.

There was also an option to buy a shirt but alas, I have not done so.

As for the overall progress on the book itself, the rough draft is almost done. I should definitely wrap that up by the end of the week. I am pleased.

When that’s done, I’ll have 4 books in various stages of editing. 2015 should be interesting as far as releases go.
