Mondaying

Much like last week, there is no movie post this week. We attended a monster truck function on Saturday, which is our usual movie watching day. I like the monster truck shows but wow they’re long.

I discovered something interesting the other day. When I got the print version of Pestilence Rising up and running on Amazon, I saw they had a new option for distribution to other retailers. Well, turns out, one of those retailers carrying createspace print copies is Barnes and Noble (or someone selling through Barnes and Noble), probably one of amazon’s primary competitors. I’ve never been able to offer my print books through Barnes and Noble, so I’m kind of excited about that. Here’s the link in case you want to check it out: LINK

I also wanted to announce that the Pestilence Rising ebook is now free for download in ibooks and at barnesandnoble.com

I would like to make it free in the Amazon Kindle store. If you read on Kindle and would like the book for free, that process could be helped along with a price difference report sent to amazon. Here is the link for the book page: LINK TO AMAZON

There’s a link farther down on the page that says: “Tell us about a lower price”. It asks for the price, etc, which is $0.

I would greatly appreciate any help I can get with this endeavor. The book is currently free for download at

kobo: http://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebook/pestilence-rising

ibooks: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/pestilence-rising/id719727090?mt=11

smashwords: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/361015

barnes and noble: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/pestilence-rising-lea-ryan/1117051824?ean=9781493531707

pretty much everywhere that isn’t amazon.

And finally, because he hasn’t appeared on the blog in a while, here’s a picture of Maxwell. This is his scared face, which is also his most of the time face.

an October kind of story

iyrico cover2

Hey there! How’s the week so far? Good, yes?

I just thought I’d pop onto the blog for a quick announcement. I have a story. The title is Iyrico. The current plan is to post it to the blog in parts, probably beginning in mid-October and ending on Halloween or maybe the day before Halloween because people are kinda busy on Halloween itself.

If you aren’t into the serial fiction thing, it should also go up for free in its entirety on the wattpad app, scribd, obooko (if I can remember how to work it) and probably smashwords.

But what is it about? Here’s a rough draft description.

Levi doesn’t like going to Cliff House. Never mind how strange it is, the place is dangerous. Its location atop a bluff. Poisonous foliage. A pack of stray dogs prowling the property. Not to mention his ten-year-old cousin, Nessa, who may or may not have tried to kill him during a previous visit. Little does he know, even she isn’t the biggest threat Cliff House has to offer. Darker secrets lurk.

some updates and a beta read offer

How are you today, fellow netizens? I am quite fine and dandy. I’ve scheduled myself a mini writing retreat during the last week of March. The kids are leaving on vacation without me (sigh), so the house will be quiet. I thought it would be a good time to get the next book going. I’m taking a four-day weekend.

Now, if I can just keep myself from getting distracted by video games and keep my husband from devouring my time like it’s some gourmet dish, I think all will go swimmingly.

I sometimes have this grand notion that I could barricade myself in a hotel room with no distractions and get a lot done that way, but honestly, I’d probably just drink a bunch of wine and sleep for like 15 hours. So yes, home is probably better for productivity. Plus I have my kitchen with my food in it and Maxwell (cat) is there. I am quite fond of his presence.

The project this weekend is the cover art for Pestilence Rising. I have a good idea of what I want, font and such. I’m quite confident it’s going to be my best cover yet. And it won’t be black! Crazy, right? I’ll give y’all a look when it’s finished.

That reminds me, I would like to find one or two beta readers for the final version. The book has been edited and beta-read, but I’m still paranoid about typos and such. I have trouble leaving things alone and am worried I’ve screwed part of it up somewhere along the line.

If anyone is interested in beta reading for me, shoot me an email at lea-ryan at hotmail dot com and let me know if you would like a doc or pdf or an epub file and I’ll send it. I would be happy to thank you by name in the acknowledgements.

Here’s the book description as it stands now.

“When Hunter’s emotions break free of his control, any person unfortunate enough to be standing nearby is stricken with a wasting sickness. His affliction has alienated him from his family and prevented him from making any real friends. His life is one of isolation imposed by both himself and his domineering employer, but all that is about to change.

The Center for the Preservation of Natural Order classifies his kind as “ravagers”, just another anomaly from which they must protect the rest of society. The Center allows Hunter to remain free on the condition that he work for them, identifying other people like him for capture. The arrangement works for all parties involved until a girl claiming to be an angel appears in his living room.

Celeste brings word that a cult has kidnapped his estranged brother, and Hunter is the only person who can save him. The two of them plunge into the rainy night with Center agents hot on their tail.

As if their journey weren’t perilous enough, they have to deal with rising floodwaters consuming the countryside and bizarre interference brought by a beautiful, tattooed woman appearing to Hunter as a reflection in glass and water. She seeks to lure him away from Celeste, toward a place in which he no longer has to fear what he is. He will be forced to decide where his loyalties lie.”

My Freedom by 40 Plan and a Goodreads Giveaway

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about where I want to go and how I want to get there. Since I started writing books, I’ve never had any doubt that I want to write fiction for a living. However, the full-time writing career has always been this maybe-someday-if-I’m-really-lucky thing. I don’t want it to be like that anymore. I don’t want to feel like this goal is out of my reach.

That’s why I have made an official goal. I want to be writing fiction full time on or before my 40th birthday. I’m 34 now (35 in October), so that gives me about 5.5 years to kick some ass. And kick some ass, I shall.

Having a deadline has inspired a sense of urgency in me. I would like to kick out 3 books a year, ideally. That’s a book every 4 months. Can I do it? I can damn well try; I already know that. I have willingness, the work ethic, notes for several books. I just need to step up the pace and manage my time better.

Anyway, guess who has a giveaway listed on the Goodreads. Me! *fancy-pants-dance* If you would like to win a true to life, dead tree copy of Lair of the White Wyrm, please utilize the oddly spaced widget below. Also, don’t forget to add it to your bookshelf because that’s what all the cool kids are doing.
